Job Profile
Job summary Results-driven manager to serve as Managing Editor for F W Media’s Writer’s Digest brand, responsible for managing the editorial staff, allocating resources across projects as needed, and ensuring all book-related products (whether print or online based) get done on time and at an acceptable quality level. Work with designers, production dept., and marketing staff as quality control from contract signing to the printer. Make sure that the finished products are what the company intended. Primary job responsibilities • Directly manage in-house content editors for all books in the Writing Community (six annual market guides and 18-20 trade titles). Oversee production schedules and resources, ensure projects are completed on time, and shift resources as needed when projects need more attention or need to be released more quickly. • Directly edit Market Book titles as needed and/or coordinate inside and outside resources to assemble and edit content. • Coach community members on developing great content, offer constructive feedback to authors/freelancers to improve content, and edit materials when other team members are unable. • Manage development and production of two SIPs/bookazines • Participate in editorial marketing efforts (via social media, print channels, and online marketing messages) to sell products; assist in creation of marketing messages focused on writers across all channels. • Review, edit, and consult e-mail and website marketing copy, back cover copy, etc. • Handle disputes with authors in development/production. • Assist in development of the webinar schedule and assignment of presenters. • Assist in coordination of webinars with guest presenters. • Write/develop marketing copy for webinars. • Organize/administrate on-site weekend events (Editors’ Intensives). Liaise as needed on marketing and logistics. Assign editors manuscripts for critique, develop event schedule, etc. Requirements: • Bachelor’s degree required, and 3 years of hands-on editorial experience. • Excellent project management skills, with ability to handle a large flow of paperwork and electronic communications • Ability to coordinate details for a variety of books underway simultaneously. Must be able to solve production problems to make sure projects become finished products on time. • Judge appropriate level of editorial effort necessary to achieve overall departmental goals of quality, timeliness and market appeal. • Experience working with database or content management systems a plus. Must be able to pick up on and understand new technology quickly. • Knowledge of InDesign for Macintosh highly desirable. • Flexible, creative, and consistent work style; strong sense of accountability for all areas of work; demonstrated collaborative spirit and leadership ability. • Ability to multi-task, be extremely well-organized, manage time effectively and identify resources for projects. • Ability to understand complex organizational structure and work through administrative systems. • Ability to work in both groups and individually to meet short-term and long-term goals and objectives.
